The <b>Google Keyword Tool</b>, well know and used by bloggers for keyword research
 over the years, has now been replaced by a new tool called Google 
Keyword Planner. Perhaps this new tool is just in accordance with the latest SEO changes -
 or perhaps it isn't. But whether for the better or the worse, we're now
 stuck with tool for carrying out research on keywords, since its 
predecessor was one of the best free tools we had for the purpose. This 
post is all about using this new keyword tool for blogging (and SEO).</div>

What's new?</h3>

Google has shaken up quite a few things here. First of all, the tool is 
no longer public. You have to sign up for an AdWords account, which even
 though is free, still doesn't beat the convenience offered by the 
freely and publicly available tool of the past.</div>

Then there's the lack of device segmentation. You can no longer segment 
desktop, tablet and mobile traffic, since now it's all merged into a 
single number, which is a big fat bummer for many who have 
mobile-/tablet-optimized websites and drive a significant traffic from 
mobile devices. As you use the tool, you'll realize that a lot more has 
changed (as we'll soon discuss).</div>

Using Google Keyword Planner</h3>

The interface has been changed, and when you log into the tool, you can see four options you can choose from.</div>

The options are pretty straightforward. You can search for new keyword 
and ad-group ideas using a single, or a list of keywords, or you can 
look up search volumes or traffic estimates. Here are the options 
explained briefly.</div>

 - Find new keywords related to a phrase, website, or category. This is 
the most basic, and most used option for finding keyword ideas</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><b>Get search volumes for a list of keywords or group them into ad groups</b> - Enter or upload keywords to research historical stats like search volume, or group them into ad groups</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><b>Get traffic estimates for a list of keywords</b> - Enter or upload keywords to get click and cost estimates</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><b>Multiply keyword lists to get new keyword ideas</b> - Create new keyword combinations and get search volume stats or traffic estimates </li>

Now there are quite a few things to keep in mind while researching for keywords.</div>

<li style="text-align: justify;"><b>Location-targeting</b> - The old 
keyword tool only allowed for "local" and "global" results. Now, you get
 results for the defined location settings. Not only can you choose a 
particular country, you can even drill down to a city! You can change 
location settings from the left-column.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><b>Trends</b> - The old keyword tool 
provided average search volume from the most recent month, which can be 
very misleading. Sales of certain products are seasonal - they fall in 
one month, and spike in another. The new Planner, however, reduces the 
chance for misinterpretation by showing an overall year average, with a 
convenient pop-over showing seasons monthly trends in volume<br />

<li style="text-align: justify;"><b>CPC</b> - The new tool has estimated
 keyword CPC data turned on by default, unlike the old tool, and is 
supposedly more accurate than the old one.</li>
</ul>
So are the new changes worth celebrating, or are we going to miss the 
old tried-and-true Google Keyword Tool? For a heavy AdWords user or a 
Google shareholder you should welcome the change!   AdWords users will 
appreciate the tighter integration in terms of being able to brainstorm 
and easily add keywords to their campaign.  Plus, the “more accurate” 
CPC estimates, ideas tab, and increased visibility into location 
targeting are all nice touches.<br />
<br />
But sadly, this transition seems to be in line with changes Google’s 
made over the last few years that are increasingly focusing on 
satisfying shareholders and the bottom line.  By making the tool only 
accessible via AdWords, Google is guaranteed to increase revenues as 
more people sign up for accounts.  And Conductor’s insights into the 
unusual increase in reported search volumes are unusually convenient for
 Google from the perspective of potentially enticing more advertisers.<br />
<br />
And in a world where mobile is growing insanely fast, I can’t think of 
any good reasons for limiting insights user have into mobile search.  
It’s a real disappointment that this functionality is no longer 
available.<br />

Sadly, we think our old beloved keyword tool has been re-positioned to 
benefit AdWord users and Google’s interests more than the average

index status used to be pretty generic, and showed data from the website
 as a whole. Now, Google has upgraded it to track indexed URLs for

including the parts that use HTTPS. This was not possible before, and

matter of the flow of Page Rank, and could be seen as a violation. Let's

Page Rank flow</h3>

As per the original PageRank paper that defines how it works, the flow 
of PageRank is divided evenly amongst the total number of links on a 
page. So if there's only one link of a page, all the PageRank flows 
through it, whereas if there are 10 links, this amount gets divided by 
10.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
So according to this scheme, if you have two links from one page to 
another, both would flow PageRank. If the number of links on a page is 
significant, say more than a dozen, then two links pointing to one page 
would make almost twice as much PageRank to flow to that page.</div>

Anchor text</h3>

The flow of PageRank is not effected by anchor text. If it's a link, 
there's some PR flowing through it, no matter what the anchor text says.
 But as far as anchor text itself goes, Google has a link extraction 
process which looks at all the links on a page, extracts them, and 
annotate them with the document they're pointing to.</div>

The idea is to establish relationships between pages. Say you have three
 pages, A B and C. A points to B and C, B points back to A, but not to 
C. C points at both A and B. There are two links from C to B. So the 
purpose of the link extraction process is to understand how these pages 
are linked. Given the above scenario, it might form associations such as
 A-B, A-C, B-A, C-A, and C-B.</div>

Now a single link or multiple links don't mean anything to this 
algorithm, whose job it is to simply understand the relationships. So 
when encountered multiple links to a single target, it might select the 
first link, or any random link, or some (or all) of the links. The 
behavior depends, and it changes over time, but doesn't have any real 
impact on rankings etc.</div>

The takeaway from this post is, even if there is some SEO effect, it is 
negligible, as this is just one small aspect of SEO, and it would be 
better to simply focus on more important things. Personally, I would 
recommend that you use multiple links with care.</div>

If you want to give value to an external page, say in case of a guest 
post, then multiple links would do more good than harm. Similarly, while
 internal-linking,
 if it makes sense to add the same hyperlink with different anchor text,

'Related Posts' plugins, or referring to an affiliate link again and 
again - that sort of thing is usually not well received.</div>
